Keeping track of information on a dairy can be hard, especially when different crews have little contact with each other. One way to keep track of information is to use common traffic areas as a place to post information. An area that is commonly overlooked is the front or side of a utility refrigerator. Colostrum, vaccines and other high-use items are often kept in areas that affect different teams, so keeping track of these items on a refrigerator door can be an easy way to communicate.
There are two keys to making this work. First is a good set of dry-erase markers. Because of their non-pourous, slick exterior, refrigerators make an excellent dry-erase surface. It is easy to write on and easy to clean off with a moist towel. Information can be easily relayed and updated as necessary. As long as the markers write well, it is easy to communicate needed information efficiently. The second key is to keep the information updated. Any communication on a dairy is only as good as the use and upkeep of that information. Those who use the information need to be responsible for keeping it up-to-date and accurate. If done correctly, the information relayed with this easy-to-use system can speed up the workflow of those involved and avoid confusion. Remember that brief, concise information is the easiest to use and remember. EL
