El Lechero Dairy Basics - Management
Friday, 04 June 2010 16:58

After the first issue of 2010, I heard from a few dairy owners asking why we wrote about a dairy sending its employees on an “expensive” trip to Disneyland.

“Now employees ask me when they get to go to Disneyland,” they told me. I’ve suggested that they ask their employees if they are willing to show their loyalty to the dairy just like the two brothers we featured – Manuel and Oswaldo Castellanos.

el_english_badgeWhen I remind them that both of them have worked for the same dairy for a consecutive 10 years with no returning home to Mexico, no extended work releases for injury and no looking for a new employer who paid just a bit more, most say their employees wouldn’t qualify. If you want loyal employees, does your dairy have a big enough reward to entice them to be loyal?

Now I want to introduce to you Sergio. Featured on this page for the first time, Sergio is a profile of a real-life dairy worker. He is one of those loyal employees I just talked about. The real Sergio has been working with a large-herd dairy in southern California for 16 years and is currently a feeder.

In future issues, this cartoon image of Sergio will call attention to certain articles or information you won’t want to miss. Our quiz each issue (see page 28) will ask you to locate where he is. If you read nothing else each issue, find the page Sergio is on and read it.

Sergio has a big smile, loves his job and is good at it. He looks for ways to do his job better, quicker and save money at the same time. He’s the type of employee every owner would want.

Get started being that employee by reading this issue.  EL
