| ASABE develops safety standard for fan ventilation of manure-storage structures |

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) announces the completion of a new safety standard, ANSI/ASABE S607, Ventilating Manure Storages to Reduce Entry Risk. The new standard is intended to enhance the safety of those working in and around confined-space manure storages. Such structures can trap built-up concentrations of noxious gases such as hydrogen sulfide, methane and carbon dioxide. Numerous farm fatalities occur each year from related asphyxiation and poisoning, but the risks of these can be reduced with forced ventilation, which has been shown to be effective for replenishing oxygen and reducing the noxious gases. With this new standard, engineering guidelines are now available to safety specialists, engineers, designers and distributors of confined-space manure storages. The guidelines will also aid storage owners in ventilating manure storage areas prior to entry for retrieval, repair or maintenance of equipment.
