Progressive Dairyman columnist and long-time dairy industry advocate Ben Yale passed away June 13, 2012, from complications following surgery. Funeral details are still forthcoming. More details will follow as they are available.

Progressive Dairyman sends its regrets to Ben Yale's family and the many dairy interests he has represented over the years.

"We are sorrowful for the loss of a great industry advocate," Progressive Dairyman Editor Walt Cooley said. "Ben was an artful communicator who was uniquely able to shine historical context on today's most important industry issues. He inspired many through his words, and he will be greatly missed."

View statements below from dairy organizations expressing condolences:

"It is with deep sorrow that we report that Ben Yale passed away last night while undergoing heart surgery in Ohio. Ben was a friend to many, many people in the dairy industry, and he was instrumental in the founding of both Continental Dairy Products and Select Milk Producers. He worked with us there for more than twenty years. Ben represented the co-ops in both politics and business, and we are truly grateful for his service. While Ben dedicated himself to his work, his family and his faith were even more important to him. He was an active member of his church. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, daughter Jen and son David. His loss will be sorely felt."

—Rance Miles of Select Milk Producers, Inc. on behalf of Michael J. McCloskey and Timothy C. den Dulk

"We are sad to report that Ben Yale has passed away. As many will recall, Ben worked for Dairy Producers of New Mexico as our attorney for many years. Ben was a good lawyer who helped DPNM with many issues. He will be missed."

—Beverly Idsinga, Executive Director, Dairy Producers of New Mexico

"Ben was a member of what we fondly call the Milk Bar, a small group of attorneys who make their living dealing with dairy issues – mostly regarding the Federal Milk Marketing Order system. Ben was an excellent attorney but was also a competent economist well versed in how markets could and did function within the confines of the Federal Order legal structure. He was also a good man and a good friend. He will be missed."

—Bill Van Dam, Alliance of Western Milk Producers

Yale began contributing to the magazine in 2008.  PD

  1. I am so sorry to hear that Mr. Yale has passed. His insight to dairy industry workings will be missed by many... My self included. I've enjoyed his articles and book reccommnendations for years. My condolences go out to his family.
  2. What sad news. I always read his articles with my current favorite being the one on Linclon's people's Department he wrote in April. His reading list for 2012 was very good bringing books to light that I never knew existed. He really tried to break down big ideas or concepts for the everyday dairy man to understand. I will greatly miss reading his views . Rest in peace Ben .
