Age: 36 (Alicia) and 39 (Jonathan)
Location: Oakfield, New York
My dairy’s history: Lamb Farms, Inc., is a third-generation dairy farm. It was started by Jonathan’s grandfather Leslie who milked about 45 cows. Currently, the farm milks about 5,700 cows at three locations, and tills 11,000 acres. The farm is a partnership of Jonathan and his brother Matthew, their father Gordon, and a non-family partner, Jim Veazey.
I have been a member of Holstein USA for… both of us were members as kids, so about 27 years.
I joined Holstein USA because… We joined as youth members to show cattle and become involved in programs such as Dairy Bowl. We retained our adult membership to register cattle, then became more involved as youth leaders.
Now we are both involved more closely at the national level. Jonathan is on the board of directors for Holstein USA and has served on several national committees. Alicia is part of the National Holstein Women’s Scholarship Organization, Inc.
What Holstein USA does best is… Provide us as breeders with the basic tools we need to market our animals through classification, genetic evaluations, etc. Also, the Holstein Association strives to protect breeders’ interests at a government level through the milk pricing program, genetics evaluations, etc.
An influential or interesting person I’ve met through Holstein USA is… Horace Backus, who is a living legend – we have learned so much history of the breed [from him]. Dave and Merry Rama have helped us with the marketing of our animals through the years.
If I were running this organization, I would… encourage unity among the dairy industry. Farmers from large and small operations, commercial and show-type farms, conventional and organic practices need to come together to protect our interests in genetics, food safety, animal welfare, etc. And members of the dairy industry (sire companies, feed companies, pharmaceutical companies, etc.) should be supportive of and encourage this unity as well.
My advice to all dairymen and women is… to take advantage of opportunities when they are presented and save up for the rainy days. PD
