Since my infancy, I have heard the stories of Jesus and grew up with their messages ringing in my ears, but I never cease to marvel how sometimes deeper meanings leap out at me, and I see the events with different eyes. The story of the nine lepers is one of those stories.

“And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:

And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

The yellow leaves of autumn are sprinkling the trees. Soon they will be full-blown orange and red. The world will be a panorama of beauty. Summer will be forgotten, and thoughts of winter will come with the chill of breezes that shake the dappled trees. It makes me think of a Shakespeare sonnet I memorized in an acting class when I was in college.

Back then, when I was young, I didn’t think too much about the autumn of my life. Now it is a daily thought. My hair is laced with strands of silver, and I move with a certain precision. The energy of summer is gone, and I long for my pillow at night. Oh, I’m not old, if you compare me to the mountains and the stars in the sky. I am a spring chicken, but I certainly feel the coming of winter.

As I have worked with the Boy Scouts, I have gained a greater appreciation for the Constitution, and for the Founding Fathers, who set up this nation of free people. I am one of those people who believe that Jesus Christ had a hand in setting up the Constitution. I believe the Founding Fathers spent a great deal of time on their knees communicating with Deity.

They were men of understanding and wisdom because they knew how to listen to God and follow his divine council. They were men who listened to each other, saw the needs of the people, and put those needs above their own passion for power and fame. Devout Christians do that. It was in this spirit that they wrote and ratified the Constitution.

During the Dark Ages, when I was in seventh grade at Heber School, I was required to memorize the Gettysburg Address. I puzzled over the meanings and archaic mentions of time. I didn’t know what “four score” meant, and words like dedicate and consecrate and hollow were enigmas, but over the years, I have reflected again and again on the famous speech and have been moved to tears at its meaning.

Just recently, I taught a Citizenship in the Nation merit badge class to a group of Boy Scouts. We went through each requirement and talked about the founding of this great land and its inherent blessings of liberty. I talked to them of their sacred duty to become an informed citizen and to guard our freedoms. Finally, I quoted the Gettysburg Address and explained each part so that none could misunderstand. Then I asked them the question, “Why is the Gettysburg Address relevant today?”

A few weeks ago, I was privileged to act as a merit badge councilor for a group of Boy Scouts. I have been a merit badge councilor for Citizenship in the Nation (a merit badge) for over twenty years. I went to the dentist the other day to get a root canal, and the young dentist said, “Do you remember when you taught us about the Constitution in Boy Scouts?”

I vaguely remembered sitting around my kitchen table in Wickenburg, Arizona, struggling through the information for the first time. I had no idea anyone would remember. The young doctor proceeded to tell me that merit badge had been the basis for his Constitutional studies in college.
